Have you ever put butter in your coffee? It’s so frickin’ good (yep, I’m a huge Family Guy fan and this is a cheesy reference to the “Butter on a Pop Tart” song)! This bulletproof coffee has butter in it, and it’s amazing!

Bulletproof coffee is the perfect indulgence on the keto diet. It’s loaded with healthy fats and you get a nice boost of energy from the coffee and MCT oil. It’s delicious any time but is also nice to enjoy when you feel like you need a little pick-me-up!

Reap the benefits of bulletproof coffee with this simple recipe! Feel full, get an energy boost, and regain focus fast!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

The practice of adding butter to warm drinks has been around for quite a long time. It was popularized in America by Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof Nutrition. The term “bulletproof coffee” is actually trademarked and uses the Bulletproof brand coffee and Brain Octane MCT oil. People tend to use the term to refer to any brand coffee with butter and MCT oil in it.

The Bulletproof coffee recipe consists of Bulletproof brand coffee (which is organic and very high quality), grass-fed butter, and Brain Octane MCT oil. I’ve never tried the Brain Octane MCT oil, but I have tried the Bulletproof coffee, which is heavenly! I am not associated with or an affiliate of Bulletproof. I’m simply writing this article because I love adding butter and MCT oil to my coffee and wanted to share it with you wonderful people!

Benefits of Drinking Bulletproof Coffee

Aside from tasting amazingly yummy, there are some noticeable benefits to drinking this keto butter coffee (aka Bulletproof coffee).

  • Satiety – thanks to the healthy fat, it keeps you feeling full for a long time
  • Energy – the MCT oil is metabolized right away for a quick energy boost
  • Focus – the combination of MCT oil and caffeine help keep you focused
  • Promotes Ketosis – the high healthy fat and low carb content encourages a state of ketosis, which results in weight loss

Mistakes to Avoid When Making Keto Butter Coffee

There’s a few things you can do to be sure you get the tastiest keto butter coffee possible. Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to having the best experience possible.

Don’t Skip the Blending Process

I know it’s tempting to just throw some butter and oil in a cup and stir, but it won’t mix properly. You’ll end up with clumpy coffee with oil slicks in it – yuck!

You can use an immersion stick blender, Nutribullet, or a full size blender. Using a battery powered frother works great if you want to make your keto butter coffee at work! Any of these will work – the important thing is that it gets blended and not just shaken in a bottle or stirred in a mug!

Use a Good Quality MCT Oil

Without going into a long scientific explanation, there are 4 type of MCT that have different length chains and are absorbed by the body at different rates. The shorter the chain (lower the number), the faster it’s absorbed. The 4 types of MCT oil are:

  • C6 (caproic acid) – almost never used in MCT oil because of foul taste
  • C8 (caprylic acid) – the best you can find, metabolized very fast
  • C10 (capric acid) – very good, still metabolized fast
  • C12 (lauric acid) – metabolized slower, not the best for keto butter coffee

When buying your MCT oil, choose one that contains C8 and/or C10 with little to no C12 in it. While there’s nothing wrong with C12 and it is a healthy fat, you won’t feel the super fast energy boost with it because it takes longer for the body to metabolize.

Be sure to check the label to see which MCT oils are used in the product. You can find this information listed in the nutrition label and/or ingredient list. I’ve seen this information listed in both forms (as C8 or caprylic acid), so keep this in mind when reading the label. Sometimes it’s very noticeable on the front of the label too. I use Left Coast MCT Oil because it’s non-GMO, has a good ratio of C8 to C10 and is very affordable.

Use Unsalted Grass-Fed Butter If You Can

Grass-fed butter has some added nutritional value over the regular butter. It has a better Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio, and higher amounts of vitamin K and CLA. If you can splurge for the grass-fed butter, I’d say go for it!

That being said, you can totally make this with regular butter – just be sure that it’s real butter and not margarine!

Whether you choose grass-fed or not, make sure that your butter is unsalted!

If you’re looking for a dairy-free option, you can substitute ghee or the butter.

Making Your Keto Butter Coffee

Making keto butter coffee (aka Bulletproof coffee) is really fast and easy. You will need brewed hot coffee, unsalted butter, MCT oil, and some sort of blender for the basic recipe.

When I make a big batch (usually triple batch) to share with the hubby, I use my Blendtec blender. In the mornings when everyone’s still sleeping, I use my immersion blender which is much quieter and convenient to mix right in my mug.

When brewing your coffee, you can make it a bit stronger if you like or choose to make it like you always do – totally up to you!

After your coffee is done brewing, gather your butter and MCT oil.

Keto butter coffee basic ingredients

For the base recipe, you’ll need:

  • 8 ounces of your favorite hot coffee
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (grass-fed if you can)
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil (C8 / C10 is best)

When I make this to share with hubby, I triple the recipe, blend it all up and then split it between two big coffee mugs. The pictures here show a triple batch, so you will notice the blender filled to 24 ounces.

Hot coffee, unsalted butter, and MCT oil in blender before blending.

If you’re using an immersion stick blender, add the ingredients to your coffee mug. If using a Nutribullet or regular blender, add the ingredients to the blender carafe.

Blend until the mixture is combined and frothy (about 15-20 seconds or so).

After blending, the mixture will look frothy.

A Note About First Time Use of MCT Oil

If you’re new to using MCT oil I recommend starting with a small amount (like 1/2 teaspoon) and gradually increasing up to 1 tablespoon over a few days or weeks. Some people have tummy trouble when using a full tablespoon on the very first use.

Pour the keto butter coffee mixture into your favorite mug and enjoy!
